Philip Hofer (1898-1984) was a librarian, book collector, and founder and first curator of the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts at Houghton Library at Harvard University. Hofer graduated from Harvard College and spent a few years in business. He began collecting a wide variety of printed books in 1917. Walter Maynard Ferguson was born on May 4, 1928 in Verdun, an arrondissement of Montreal, Canada. His mother was a violinist with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and and he and his brother Percy showed early musical aptitude.
